Severe Weather Update: April 5, 10:30 a.m.

April 5, 2023

Many AEP Ohio customers have been affected by the high winds and storms that have resulted in power outages over the last several weeks. Unfortunately, more severe storms and high winds are in the forecast across Ohio beginning this afternoon. Our crews are preparing their trucks and equipment in the event of power outages — and we’re encouraging customers to prepare and stay alert.

AEP METEOROLOGIST REPORT: AT-A-GLANCE

Our meteorologists are closely monitoring a line of severe thunderstorms and high winds expected to hit our service territory today. Below is information on how this system could impact AEP Ohio customers:

  • At 6:45 AM EDT, radar showed a line of thunderstorms with some embedded severe thunderstorm warnings moving into central Illinois. A disturbance moving into southern Indiana is also triggering thunderstorm development.
  • Storms will move into the AEP Ohio area this afternoon-evening. A broken line of severe storms is expected with scattered-numerous 60-70 mph wind gusts likely and some tornadoes are also possible. Significant utility problems are likely.

GETTING AHEAD OF THE STORM: POWER OUTAGE PREPAREDNESS

With severe weather on the horizon, now is the time to make plans and prepare for what you’ll do if there’s a power outage. Strong wind gusts can also create hazards. Follow these tips to keep you and your loved ones safe:

  • Stay tuned to your local forecast to keep track of incoming storms and inclement weather.
  • Know the difference between storm watches and storm warnings. According to the National Weather Service, a watch indicates that conditions are favorable for the development of severe weather. Anyone in the affected area should be ready to move to a place of safety if the watch is upgraded to a warning or if threatening weather approaches. A warning means that severe weather is imminent and there may be impending danger to life and property. Anyone in the affected area should seek safe shelter immediately.
  • Develop an emergency preparedness plan and emergency kit for you and your family. Also, contact family, friends and neighbors who are elderly or have a medical condition to ensure they have a plan — and don’t forget to include pets in your planning.
  • Secure any loose objects outside of your home such as furniture, umbrellas or trampolines that could become airborne in strong winds.
  • Stay away from any downed wires. Call 911 and report any hazards through the AEP Ohio mobile app or by calling AEP Ohio at (800) 672-2231.

NOTE: We strongly encourage customers with life-supporting medical equipment to have a backup power source and an alternate plan in the event of a power outage.
