How to Read Your Bill

There are several ways a bill may change based on your energy needs. See these sample bills for an overview of features.

Why Did My Bill Change This Month?

There are a few common areas to examine when seeing how bills change from month to month. Grab a recent paper bill or log in to download a copy. Start by comparing the kWh usage to a previous bill.

Is your usage 10% higher than last month or the same period last year?

Your bill could have gone up due to a change in one of the rates on your bill.

Check your generation costs. Many providers offer periodic or adjustable rates, which can affect your bill compared to a previous month.

For a deeper dive, consider scheduling a virtual session with one of our energy advisors to walk through your energy usage and discuss possible solutions.

Here are some possible causes and solutions.

Were there more days in your billing cycle?

Having a few extra days in your billing cycle could lead to a higher bill.

Solution

This should even itself out as other months have shorter cycles.

Was the temperature hotter or colder than normal?

This can cause your HVAC to not only run more, but to also rely on its extra power sources to heat or cool in extreme temperatures.

Solution

View our tips on seasonal savings and money saving programs.

Were there any changes to your household like an additional appliance, new devices added, guests staying at the house, working from home?

This could cause your usage to increase beyond what you normally use.

Solution

Complete a home energy profile on our energy dashboard to learn more about where your top energy costs come from and what to do about them.

Review your usage on your energy dashboard. Is your usage still high even when you weren't home?

This is likely due to something still running that you didn't anticipate.

Use our online bill comparison tool to get a breakdown of how you used energy last month.

Are there unusual spikes in daily or hourly usage?

There could be something malfunctioning in your house such as your heat pump, a clogged air filter or a device not turning off properly.

Monitor your home's usage. If something looks off, please consider scheduling a virtual session with an energy advisor to walk through your energy usage.
