Save with Plug-In Electric Vehicle (PEV) Rate

Our Plug-In Electric Vehicle (PEV) rate offers a reduced electric rate to customers with a plug-in electric vehicle (EV) on the distribution component of the bill. This rate is designed to reward you for helping to better balance demand on the electric grid. To enroll in this rate, you must have a plug-in electric or hybrid vehicle that is charged at your home. The PEV rate can be applied to your whole home, or a separate meter installed for EV charging load. Details of the different tariff options are described below:

Frequently Asked Questions

The first step to learning which tariff would be best for you is to understand your:

  • Energy Usage, both on and off peak. Energy usage is the total amount of electricity used during a period of time. It is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh), and rates are stated as ¢/kWh. The Energy Dashboard is a helpful tool to help you find your on-peak and off-peak energy usage.
  • Peak Demand, which is the highest amount of electricity used at once. It is measured in kilowatts and rates are stated at $/kW. To further illustrate the principles of usage versus demand - your electric demand would be higher if you were to charge your EV and run an electric clothes dryer each for an hour but at the same time, than if you were to run each device for an hour but at different times. Your energy usage for running the two devices would remain the same for both scenarios. The Energy Dashboard can also be used to help you find your on-peak demand.

After you identify your energy usage and/or demand, you can calculate each PEV tariff using the bill calculation spreadsheets available at Rates (aepohio.com).

Yes, you can charge your electric vehicle at any time of the day. You’ll pay more for your usage during On-Peak hours. You can save by charging during Off-Peak times.

  • The Pilot Whole Home (Tariff 029 / 809) and Whole Home (Tariff 048 / 807) options do not require any additional equipment.
  • The Pilot Separately Metered (Tariff 039 / 815) requires a new service and meter base that serves your EV charger. The meter is provided to you free of charge. You are responsible for hiring a licensed electrician to install the meter base outside. Once that is completed and has passed an electrical inspection, we will install the new meter.
  • The Separately Metered (Tariff 049 / 808) requires a base for a deductive meter. The deductive meter is provided to you free of charge. You are responsible for hiring a licensed electrician to install the meter base outside between the electrical panel and your EV charger. Once that is completed and has passed an electrical inspection, we will install the new deductive meter.

Like a primary electric meter, it remains with the house and we maintain ownership of both. Having both meters in place is a great benefit to promote when selling your home.

  • For the Pilot Whole Home (Tariff 029 / 809) and Whole Home (Tariff 048 / 807) options, after your application is received, and if you are eligible, you will be enrolled in the new tariff within two billing periods or approximately 45 days.
  • For the Pilot Separately Metered (Tariff 039 / 815) tariff, we’ll coordinate with you to install a service and meter once your electrical installation is inspected.
  • For the Separately Metered (Tariff 049 / 808) tariff, we’ll coordinate with you to install a deductive meter once your electrical installation is inspected.
