Severe Storm Update: March 31, 12:30 p.m.

March 31, 2023

Another round of severe thunderstorms and widespread, strong winds across AEP Ohio’s service territory beginning late tonight through tomorrow could cause power outages. AEP Ohio crews are at the ready, preparing equipment and supplies — and are encouraging customers to be prepared, too. Crews will work to restore any power outages as quickly and safely as possible, but lingering strong wind gusts could delay some restoration efforts.

“We know our customers depend on us to keep the power on and that the repeated hits of severe weather have been both frustrating and tiring,” said Marc Reitter, president and chief operating officer of AEP Ohio. “Our teams stand ready and prepared to restore power should outages occur, and we’ve also requested additional support from neighboring utility companies to ensure we are able to do so as efficiently as possible. We’ll continue to keep our customers updated on what to expect and are encouraging everyone to be prepared.”

HOW TO PREPARE

As weather approaches, now is the time to make plans and prepare for potential power outages.

  • Develop an emergency preparedness plan for you and your family. Contact family, friends and neighbors who are elderly or have a medical condition — and don’t forget to include your pets in your planning.
  • Assemble or refresh an emergency kit that includes (at minimum) non-perishable food, water, a flashlight, batteries, a battery-powered radio, a first aid kit, any necessary medications, fully charged portable chargers, extra cash and maps of your area.
  • Remember to secure any loose objects outside of your home such as furniture, umbrellas or trampolines that could become airborne in strong winds.

AEP Ohio strongly encourages customers with life-supporting medical equipment to have a backup power source and an alternate plan in the event of a power outage.

STAY SAFE

If incoming weather knocks out your power, below are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Stay away from downed wires and report any hazards to 911 and AEP Ohio at (800)-672-2231 or through the AEP Ohio mobile app.
  • Do not attempt to remove tree limbs or debris within 10 feet of a power line.
  • Notify AEP Ohio if you’re using a generator – this protects you and our lineworkers as they work to restore power.
  • Unplug major appliances to protect them when power is restored.

AEP Ohio will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available and the forecast solidifies at AEPOhio.com and through other communication channels.
