Pre-Storm Advisory

Update: 1/22/2026 4:22 PM ET

What You Need to Know
  • AEP meteorologists are monitoring a winter storm that is expected to reach across all of AEP Ohio’s service territory this weekend.
  • While several inches of snow are likely to impact the entire state, predicted accumulations, moisture amounts and the track of the storm are evolving.
  • Customers should follow their local forecast for the latest information about timing and intensity of the storm.
  • We strongly encourage customers with medical issues and life-supporting equipment to have a backup power source and an alternate plan in case of a power outage.

Situation Overview

Map of predicted storm track as of Jan. 22. Changes to the forecast, threat areas, times and intensities are possible.

A winter storm is expected to bring cold and snow across Ohio this weekend, with the greatest chance of accumulation lasting from Saturday afternoon through Sunday night. The southeast half of the state could see between 8 and 12 inches of snow or sleet, while areas farther north and west could receive 3 to 6 inches of snow. The chance of wetter snow and light ice increases toward the south and could spread north if the storm track shifts.

Winter Weather & Safety Preparedness Tips

AEP Ohio works hard to prepare the electric grid and our customers for all types of weather. From trimming trees away from power lines to updating equipment and adding smart technology, our crews work year-round to proactively maintain and improve the system to help prevent power outages.

Our line, tree and support personnel are ready to respond and restore power safely and as quickly as possible if outages occur. We encourage customers to:

  • Establish an emergency preparedness plan and emergency kit, and be sure to include pets in your plans. Make sure the elderly and those with medical conditions have a plan in place.
  • Remember, all downed lines are dangerous. They carry an electric current that can cause serious injury or death. If you see a fallen wire, keep yourself and others as far away as possible from it and anything it may be touching. Report hazards to 911 and AEP Ohio at 800-672-2231.
  • Travel with caution. Ice and snow can cause unsafe road conditions and vehicle accidents. Vehicles crashing into utility poles and other electrical equipment are a leading cause of power outages. If you must travel, please do so slowly and safely. If appropriate, equip vehicles with tire chains. Include an emergency kit in your vehicle.
  • Heat your home safely with tips from the Ohio State Fire Marshal. If using a space heater, place it on a hard, level surface out of high-traffic areas and at least 3 feet away from anything flammable such as curtains and bedding. Never leave a space heater running when a room is unoccupied. Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are installed and functioning properly throughout your home. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when using alternative heat sources.
  • Stay connected and make sure your contact info is current. You can enroll in text message alerts and follow AEP Ohio on Facebook and X.
