Marble Cliff Project

Rendering of Fifth Avenue Substation Upgrades

AEP Ohio representatives finished demolition at the 5th Avenue substation site last year and installed a temporary fence around the construction site. The fence ensures safety and will remain throughout the duration of the project.

Crews began construction of the substation exterior wall in February 2024. As construction continues, those living and working nearby can expect:

  • Work hours of 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on weekdays
  • Increased noise and activity at the site
  • Use of heavy machinery such as cranes, drill rigs and haul trucks
  • Increased construction traffic and temporary traffic disruptions when passing by the work zone

We'll coordinate with local traffic control to minimize the impact of traffic disruptions, while working to ensure the safety of the community and our crews.

Frequently Asked Questions

Project

We'll be upgrading and expanding our Fifth Avenue substation in Marble Cliff. This also includes connecting our distribution and transmission lines to the expanded station.

This is a multi-phased project that also includes moving Marble Cliff electric service to be powered by the expanded substation to improve reliability during a later phase. We'll keep you informed as we move through each phase of this project and will share more information about what you can expect as plans are finalized.

The Fifth Avenue Substation is nearly 70 years old. This station project upgrade and expansion is critical to meet the growing capacity needs of the area. Additionally, the project will provide improved reliability in both the residential and commercial areas of Marble Cliff.

Location

The project is taking place in Marble Cliff near the intersection of Riverside Drive and Fifth Avenue in central Franklin County.

This site represents the most suitable location that represents a balance between impacts on the natural and human environments, while meeting the purpose and need of the project. Also, the proximity of the location to the current station will mean minimal relocation of transmission and distribution facilities, as well as minimizing disruption to existing customer electric service.

AEP hired an independent consultant who evaluated nine different sites through field reconnaissance, research on each site's setting and vicinity land use and the feasibility of transmission and distribution line connectivity. Of these nine sites, three were advanced for further consideration to determine which would be most viable and appropriate to serve the purpose and need of the project.

The expanded substation will ultimately serve areas including Marble Cliff, Grandview Heights, Upper Arlington and surrounding areas.

Community

AEP Ohio has finalized plans for the Fifth Avenue Substation that incorporates feedback from the community to significantly improve the existing aesthetic views at the intersection for the community. You can view the updated renderings.

We will make every effort to minimize disruptions; however, temporary disruptions of Fifth Avenue at the site will be required during the construction process. We'll coordinate with local traffic control to minimize the impact, while working to ensure safety for the community and our crews.

We've worked to eliminate the need for any power outages as part of this phase of our work.
