GAHANNA, Ohio, June 11, 2018 – AEP Ohio, an American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP) company, in partnership with Columbia Gas of Ohio and the City of Toronto launched an innovative initiative to help residents and businesses reduce energy usage and costs through the Community Energy Savers program. The program began June 1, 2018 and runs for four months.
Community Energy Savers was first introduced by AEP Ohio in 2014. The program works with communities across the state to encourage participation in energy efficiency programs offered by AEP Ohio. Not only do community members benefit from saving energy and money in their homes and businesses, but their actions also help their community receive financial awards and technical services from AEP Ohio.
“AEP Ohio continually seeks to improve the quality of life in the communities where we live and work. That’s why we are enthusiastic about partnering with communities through the Community Energy Savers program,” said Michael LaScola, energy efficiency training and education coordinator for AEP Ohio. “The program helps to educate residents about our energy-saving programs as well as the many solutions and incentives available for businesses.”
Toronto, with the help of AEP Ohio and Columbia Gas, established a goal to increase its residents’ and businesses’ participation in select energy efficiency programs. If this goal is achieved by September 30, the City will receive a financial award of up to $37,000 and technical assistance toward the development of a Sustainability Roadmap. The financial award will be used to implement energy efficiency projects at the City of Toronto park facilities and at the future community center. The Sustainability Roadmap will provide a guide for Toronto officials to identify and prioritize energy efficiency and sustainability efforts.
“We are excited to join AEP Ohio’s Community Energy Savers program to promote energy savings in our community. We consistently look for ways for the City of Toronto and our community to save money and be more energy efficient. The funds awarded as a result of residents and businesses’ participation in energy efficiency programs will go toward energy upgrades for lighting at the Lincoln Park facilities,” said Mayor John C. Parker.
A team of volunteers will help coordinate and promote the Community Energy Savers Program. Mayor Parker leads the project as chairman of the team along with volunteers including Steve Rebich from Toronto City Council, Chelsey Fletcher, Teacher at Toronto Public Schools, Jeremy Troski, a local business leader, Jolynn Wojtas, a community member, and City Administration personnel with support from AEP Ohio and Columbia Gas.
